Diversity Unified
They are young. They go to college. They come from overseas. They all have a mutual love for the game. The Boston Blades are the only professional American women’s team in the Canadian National Hockey League. The Blades recruit from colleges, the USA National and Olympic Team, overseas, and anyone with enough talent. They meet twice a week at the Veterans Memorial Rink, a community rink on the edge of Somerville. When you walk into the rink it is not what a typical professional team would call home. The fans are mostly hockey families, friends, and relatives of the players. This amateur setting doesn’t faze the Blades. In fact, it keeps them grounded.
The most unique thing about them is their ability to play with unrepressed delight. They are always laughing and messing around at practice, but when the whistle blows, they turn into an explosion of power and grace. It is this quality that unites the different personalities to work together as a team. At the end of the day, they trade skates for shoes, jerseys for coats, and a hockey bag for a purse. They leave the rink, continuing with their unique lives, until the next practice or game when they suit up and become one. Diversity unified.
Scene Setter: Shows the banners of the many communities that play in the rink…notice the Blades don’t have a banner.
Every practice the same types of water bottles are lined up but are separated with an individual nametag.
The players meet in the center to talk about drills. Black and yellow separate the team into two and the blue jersey is reserved for players with concussions.
Kelley Steadman (US National Team) watches a drill.
Captain Caitlin Cahow (US National team & Harvard) is the quickest to focus and also the quickest to crack a joke.
Cherie Hendrickson (Providence College) chases Hilary Knight (US National Team & Uni. Wisconsin) during a drill to practice their skills.
Kacey Bellamy (US National Team & New Hampshire) Kasey Boucher (BC) and Jen Schoullis (US National Team & Uni. Minnesota) gather for a water break.
Schoullis, Bellamy, and Kate Buesser ( Harvard) share one of many laughs during practice.
The team comes in for a cheer to get amped up before the weekend game.
The crowd waits for the game to begin. The signs on the back wall are not for the Blades but for local players at the rink.
A little kid running around is not uncommon at Blades games. It’s a very community oriented audience.
Head Coach Digit Murphy goes over the lines for today’s game.
Despite the strategy being planned by Coach Murphy the assistant coaches and team always find something to laugh about.
Karen Thatcher (US National Team & Providence College) Anya Battagilo (BU) and Whitney Naslund (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) listen to the coach. Battagilo is injured but still participates as much as she can.
Trainer Samantha Fontaine wraps up Boucher’s wrist before the game.
Coach Murphy continues to make line changes in the final minutes before game times.
Knight and Molly Engstrom (US National Team & Uni. Wisonsin) are former teammates. They share amusement over a text message that was sent to Knight.
Thatcher high-five’s a local player invited to share the ice as the team lines up for the national anthem.
Coach Murphy gathers the players to the bench before they are called to the faceoff.
The team pulls in for their captains pump up speech.
The game begins.

Anne Schelper runs off the bench during a line change.
In unison… Schoullis, Schelper, and Buesser skate down the ice.
Coach Murphy is always serious on the bench.
Captain Cahow lightens to mood and cracks a joke on the bench.
The players on the bench usually prefer to stand and not sit so they can really watch every part of the game.
Fans also line the boards, preferring to stand close to the action.
Schoullis and Knight share the penalty box (they are also usually the roughest players assistant coach Mariel Lacina tells me as I take the shot).
From the bench, goalie Molly Schaus (US National Team & BU) congratulations the Blades on a goal.
Detail: Knight has played hard and the ice on her back warns the other team she isn’t afraid to get messed up.
Knight explodes off the whistle.
Katka Mrazova (HC HC Kolin & Czech National Team) stares down the other center at the faceoff.
Mrazova takes a nasty hit off the faceoff.
Buesser also takes a hit and crumples against the boards.
Trainer Fontaine checks Buesser for signs of a concussion.
The game ends in victory and the teams shake hands.
The blades perform their own winning ritual before leaving the ice to celebrate as one.
The hockey bags wait in the center of the locker room, ready to be filled with gear again.
The girls change out of their equipment quickly because they have to sign autographs after the game.
Boucher and Holly Lorms (BU) share a laugh as they discuss the win.
Battagilo and Bellamy make quick plans before they have leave and sign autographs.
Schoullis is already out the door, eager to see her brother.
Children begin to line up for autographs.
Jessica Koizumi (US National Team & Uni. Minnesota-Duluth) sings a puck for a young fan.
Koizumi packs up her car to head back to Connecticut, where she coaches the Yale women’s hockey team.
Koizumi trades her hockey bag for her purse and tells me “It’s crazy how much I drive for this but I love the team so I will be back next week to do it all again.”
